Fuel Cost Calculator

Estimate petrol or diesel cost for any trip

Plan a commute, delivery or road trip using distance, measured fuel economy and the current pump price you enter. The calculator supports litres per 100 km, kilometres per litre, US MPG and UK imperial MPG, then normalizes the result to litres for a consistent trip-cost estimate.

Metric fuel-cost formula

For L/100km: litres required = distance × consumption ÷ 100. Total fuel cost = litres required × price per litre. A return journey doubles the one-way distance before calculation.

Plan shared journey expenses

Open Options to include tolls and split the estimated total evenly between passengers. Agree in advance whether the driver, parking, wear and other vehicle costs are included.

Why real fuel use varies

Manufacturer economy figures may differ from actual driving. Traffic, idling, speed, weather, elevation, air conditioning, tyre pressure and load can increase consumption, so use a measured average when available.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate fuel cost for a trip?+

For L/100km, multiply distance by consumption and divide by 100 to get litres, then multiply by price per litre.

What is the difference between L/100km and km/L?+

L/100km measures fuel consumed over 100 kilometres, while km/L measures distance travelled on one litre.

Does the calculator support MPG?+

Yes. Options include US MPG and UK imperial MPG, which use different gallon sizes.

How do I calculate a return journey?+

Enter the one-way distance and enable Round trip in Options; the effective distance is doubled.

Can I split petrol cost between passengers?+

Yes. Enter the number of people sharing the cost to see an equal per-person estimate.

Should tolls be included in fuel cost?+

Tolls are separate from fuel. Add them under Options when you want an overall journey-cost split.

Why might real fuel consumption be higher?+

Traffic, speed, idling, weather, elevation, tyre pressure, vehicle load and driving style affect efficiency.

Can this calculate electric-car charging cost?+

Use the Electricity Cost Calculator with battery or charging kWh rather than a liquid-fuel efficiency figure.
