Calculate overtime, time-and-a-half and gross pay
Use the overtime calculator to estimate earnings for a week or any consistent pay period. Enter the regular hourly rate, straight-time hours, overtime hours and multiplier. The result separates regular wages from overtime wages so you can check the arithmetic without treating the total as a payroll or legal determination.
Overtime pay formula
Regular pay = hourly rate × regular hours. Overtime pay = hourly rate × overtime hours × multiplier. Gross pay adds regular, overtime, double-time and optional other pay before deductions.
Worked time-and-a-half example
At $20 per hour for 40 regular hours and 8 overtime hours at 1.5×, regular pay is $800 and overtime pay is $240, producing $1,040 estimated gross pay.
Check the rules that apply to you
Overtime thresholds and eligible workers differ by jurisdiction, industry, contract, day and workweek. Some rules include bonuses or shift premiums in the regular rate. Confirm hours and rates with the employment agreement, payroll team or official labour authority.
